Spooktacular Bleeding Control Class

Creative approach combines zombies, escape houses and B-Con bleeding control classes for unique take on lifesaving course

The Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (REMSA) is taking a Halloween-inspired approach to its bleeding control classes, Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse, for the community on October 20. Bleeding Control for the Injured (B-Con) educates community members on how to perform immediate and basic lifesaving interventions prior to receiving definitive medical care.

Students will go through a bleeding control course and early trauma intervention set in a haunted house that involves puzzle solving and escape house type activities.

“Just like CPR classes can help a community member provide critical lifesaving care, knowing how to assess and control bleeding on the scene can also mean the difference between life and death,” said Cindy Green, education manager for REMSA. “This unique hands-on class offers various challenging and scenario-based situations and is sure to be a memorable one.”

After attending the class, students will have learned how to manage life-threatening blood loss through the use of tourniquet application, wound packing and hemostatic dressings, as well as the basic strategies to open and maintain an airway. These courses do not require any prior medical experience, and are suited for those that want to be educated on what to do during any potential traumatic incident.
